Pros

  • Beautiful Graphics
  • Endless Exploration
  • Bountiful Content
  • Great Control System

Cons

  • Always In-Ship
  • Overwhelmingly Vast

Elite: Dangerous is an overwhelming experience simply because it is an open-world game that encompasses an entire galaxy, and the player is given free reign to explore.

The game is relatively open-ended since players have the option of operating in any way they wish. Players can be traders, explorers, pirates, or any mixture of them all as they work to earn credits. Credits are the currency in the game, and they can be used to buy upgrades for your ship.

In that sense, this game isn't the typical epic space game like what you might expect from the Star Wars franchise. Instead, the player is simply a lone pilot with a ship trying to survive in the vast galaxy. By exploring and naturally growing as a character in this world, the player starts to reach an equilibrium that reflects their true nature. The game works thanks to a fictional technology called the Jump Drive, which allows the player's ship to travel to any star in mere seconds.

The game will truly become real for players when they reach one of the giant space hubs in the game, which act as centers of trade and society. In many cases, these systems are incredibly vast and encompass a great deal to explore.

One of the most interesting things about the game is that the galaxy in which it takes place is vastly unexplored, so when players reach new hubs after traversing a new area of space, they will be paid in credits for the star charts they have mapped along their journey. This is just one way to earn credits, but it shows how fluid the game is when it comes to paths that can be taken.

The mechanics of the game are quite simple. You act as a pilot constantly inside the cockpit of a starship, and the interfaces for dealing with certain aspects of the game are displayed in bright orange menus before the player. These include star charts, navigation tools, communications, and ship configuration. Alliance can also be viewed, which is great for identifying foreign vessels.

Elite: Dangerous sounds as if it might be overwhelming, but it takes no time for the player to get accustomed to the controls and the style. Everything about flying the ship becomes second nature once you figure out the complicated controls, but after that point, there is no turning back.

Controlling the ship is part of the fun of the game also. There are a number of tasks that require extreme skill when piloting in cramped or dangerous areas, and there are pirates lurking around every planet looking for an easy target.

This game is easy to love if you are willing to put the time into it that it deserves. The game has gorgeous graphics, and mastering the controls is simple once you access the tutorials. This is basically like a Grand Theft Auto game, but for the entire galaxy.
